Winter Running Tips (added November 11, 2011)
Eddie Hoffmeier, Manager – Fleet Feet Sports
November through February is a great time to hit the weight room. I prefer high reps with less weight. Working on *plyometrics and core should also be completed regularly at this time, and planks are the best way to strengthen your core.
Remember to keep up your flexibility work. Active stretching with ropes is what I find most effective. Winter is also a good time to throw in some tempo runs (around February just before the March training starts up).
For example, add 20 minutes at an elevated pace, but make sure you don’t feel the run is as stressful as racing. Lastly, during your off-season is the perfect time to work on your form.
*Plyometrics is a type of exercise training designed to produce fast, powerful movements, and improve the functions of the nervous system, generally for the purpose of improving performance in sports.
